“Feeling Spacey”

The idea for “Feeling Spacey” came to me as I was wandering the streets of Manhattan during my time taking a 3 week intensive Fashion class at Parson’s. While nature is typically my inspiration, Manhattan’s modern, sleek, buildings spoke to me for this project. I wanted to create a work that emulated the city’s clean geometric shapes.

The original concept was actually orange patent leather, but the subtlety of the baby blue ended up balancing nicely with the sharpness of the edges/shapes composing the dress. When I went fabric shopping, I was stuck between their faux baby blue pleather and faux ostrich skin. Both would have worked out beautifully, so it came down to price, so I went with the baby blue. I still have the pattern and would love to one day remake the dress in other materials once I can get my hand on a machine sturdy enough for these thicker materials.

Along with having a more clean, geometric feel, I wanted the dress to be whimsical and almost spacey. As the design for the dress evolved, I saw a bit of a 60’s retro vibe emerging with the exaggerated hips and shoulders of the dress. This balanced nicely with the futurism of the dress. I honed in on this by styling the dress with pearls and white go-go boots.
